Turbo on the way out?

Now that I've finally got proper boost on my 88 SPG by replacing all the vacuum lines etc., I'm getting a mechanical clattering the first few times that the turbo spools up from cold. It does sound like, say, a fan with worn bearings and I'm suspicious now that the turbo itself is on the way out. The noise begins as the boost goes about half way into the yellow and then stops as soon as I take my foot off the pedal. Once warmed up the car boosts up to around 15psi before I decelerate, and there's no clatter. Anyone recognize the symptoms?
