sirius status placement?

I just got the basic sirius car kit- with the status 4 head.
Read thru the instructions and I am wondering how my saabnet pals have faired in installing the 50cent mag sat antenna - on the 1986 roof or on the trunk lid. I'm in north jersey for what ever reception difference that may make.
I figure the weather stripping on the rear window is pretty strunk and brittle - rather not introduce a leak if I follow the instructions and mount it atop the rear windshield. I thought I could even take advantage of the plastic "gutter tab" and have the antenna wire enter the cabin via the aft column vent/gills.
Second location for the sat antenna would be the forward part of the rear trunk. I wonder how much more signal "holidays" I may experience in that location.
Then the head unit- I really hate to mount or drill onto the middle dash. (I have a new vinyl dash) Yes the kit comes with a "vent mount" but the clips are oriented for horizontal vent louveres-not sure they will reach the inner horizontal louvers or support the head unit's weight this plastic is getting old!. There's a dock "swivel mount" adapter which I could mount low by the mid console pockets but then I'd have to remove my eyes from the road.
Where any how have you found the best location and install method/approach ??? Have you lost much signal by going the trunk mount route?
Thanks
