money guessing at the problem or do some actual investigation? i know i am in danger of sounding rude, so i'll try to be careful not to.

car has a mysterious timing issue. it's an ignition timing problem, not mechanical valve timing. you have also established that it is a problem that can be fixed (temporarily) be rotating the distributor. so, i would say it is likely to do with the distributor, as opposed to anything else, as it is the only thing that controls timing. unless you have one of those BTM things, that can control the timing also. i assume you don't. the shaft through the distributor is solid, and i think unlikely to break. it engages the exh camshaft with a nice mechanism, similar to a flat screwdriver in a slot, but a little off center so it only goes one way. from then on it is purely engine mechanical timing stuff, so no need to look further (chain, etc). so, we go back to the tip of the distributor, which is where the fragile stuff is. there is a ring inside that has the hall sensor on it. it rotates some amount, controlled by the vac capsule with a small peg. i don't like the small peg. it never seems secure when you put the vac capsule back on-you have to tug on the rod a couple of times to be sure it got located properly. never seen one fall out, though. the hall sensor is stationary on the ring, and is slotted to allow the notched disk to pass through, triggering the spart timing. if this disc were to get loose, it could potentially cause some kind of similar problem-but i expect the chances to be very low, and it would likely chew the little plastic hall sensor up in 3 seconds. The rotor arm is next, and it locates on the shaft with a notch and a spring plate. it is plastic, and brittle, and they have been known to lose a chunk off the shaft section, and allowing the rotor to change position. this has the direct effect of rotating the entire distributor, as it is the rotor tip in relation to the contacts inside the cap that matters. had this go on my old w123 mercedes, and a nissan pathfinder. hope this is your problem, because it doesn't get any cheaper than a new rotor, and it takes 1 minute to install. good luck.
