like Justin says, most likely pretty rare. you car being a 1988 doesn't have ABS or TCS or SRS. If you car did have any of those items you would definetly want to disconnect the battery before working on the car. Even if not working those systems in the unlikely event that you either disconnect something associated with one of those systems (perhaps for clearance to work on something else) by accident, OR you have a connector that is *weak* and you bump it, or you hit the car hard enough in the right direction (completely swag on this one) such that the sensor would register an impact and do that it's supposed to do.
So remember the above when working on a car with SRS especially.
