The lateral play is almost certainly due to that decayed rubber bushing located at the front of the shifter housing. I did mine a few years ago and i believe that i unbolted the shifter housing from the floor of the car (via those annoying three-sided nuts). Once i had the thing loose i believe I was able to rotate it around the shaft somewhat. This allowed me to bolted the white plastic lower portion from the cast aluminum upper part and freed the end of the shifter shaft from the housing. At the end of this shaft is a fairly large ring (that accepts the gear selector shaft). It looks like it isn't possible to force the rubber bushing over the end of it but it is. Use some soapy water and a bit of heat. Once the bushing is on the shaft the shift console can be re-assembled with the bushing sitting in the little machined groove at the front of the shift housing.
