The sensor in the tranny tells the upshift light that the tranny is in fifth gear. The indicator also gets input from a vacuum switch (blue-capped switch in the driver's side fenderwell) and a temperature sensor in the head.
Not sure how much of that they did away with when theyintegrated it into the ECU...
