AIC vs AMM failure

After pawing through the archives I'm still a little dusty about testing and failure trends between the AIC and the AMM.
AMM problems seem to be at startup (early in the continuum of failure) while AIC can be any time.
Both cause fluctuating idle.
AIC can be tested by moving the gate with your finger and it having some resistance, as well as by blowing through the valve to see if there are leaks through the top.
AMM testing seems spotty at best with the 'wire flash' test not necessarily indicating failure.
Is there any other way to test these widgets besides replacing with a known working?
If known working is my best option, is there anyone in the Dallas area willing to help a brother with a 1993 900 Vert?
Thanks a ton for the clarification in advance! I'd prefer to know the problem and fix it versus replacing everything and not know.
