Well, first I'd check the oil in case it's something mechanical.
What ails yours came on so sudden and sounds so total I'd try swapping the brain first. My 5-speed '89 died on the road a few months ago, ran but incredibly weak and wouldn't rev up and stay revved up. Not enough power to haul a sick whore off a piss pot, or to drive the car.
When I finally changed ECU with correct one it started right up and ran fine, instantly.
It's behind the carpet ahead of passenger's right foot. Black tin strip ahead of door (3? torx screws) and then carpet pulls down, I think some Torx sheet metal screws hold the ECU in or to its bracket, a massive multi-plug with a sheet metal clip at back end. Lift that end up away from jack, almost to 90 degrees and front tip unhooks.
If you don't have one maybe an indy garage nearby does, or if there's a car of right year in a junkyard nearby... A search on here may show what ECUs will run that car.
My car has been running a check engine light almost forever, on and off at random, and I think it was on before, during and after the above episode, so I can't comment on that aspect.
