The SEM paint in the rattle-can actually does give a professional level finish if the prep is done properly. Really . . . it looks pretty much perfect- no orange peel or runs. That said, you can have the paint shop buy the sem product in regular pint cans and spray it on with their guns. It will look exactly the same though.
When i got my spg a couple of years ago someone had sprayed glossy paint onto the skirts and bumpers. Every little ripple was visible in the plastic and the car just looked wrong. The clear may make the finish a bit more durable but most parking bumps and scrapes will take the paint off no matter how many coats you have on there. This brings me to the other advantage of using the sem product- should you get a scrape you can just sand the area, get out your rattle can and spray a perfectly colour matched repair in your garage. This can keep your bumpers in like-new condition for years.
