Unsafe alignment?

This morning I dropped my '89 900S off at the alignment shop I use
because they'll actually do alignments on old Saabs, I've always been
satisfied with their work before.
Long story short, to get the wheel straight, which may not have been
perfectly centered since I had taken it off the car recently, they
adjusted one tie rod end with about 1/2" threads exposed and the other
one with about 1" threads exposed. They thought maybe the tie rod was
bent, when in reality the steering wheel was just not on straight. Is the
adjustment being this uneven make it unsafe? I'm kind of mad
about this and am thinking about taking it back to have them do it
right, you'd think an experienced tech would think to call and ask me
if I'd had the steering wheel off.
This is a shop that only does front end work, and has been around
forever, so I'd expect that they'd know better.
