Buckmath you didnt mention seeing the red alternator idiot light.
As we know would indicate a fault in the charging system.
I had an alternator failure several years ago while driving pre-dawn and yawn and had the alternator light come on. The engine continued to run with all electrical operating ie stereo, fan etc.....for a while then one by one things continued to dim as I remembered a dealer in the town I was driving thru continued and barely made it. Headlights dimmed to 1 or 2 candle power and of course the stereo was gone..serious bummer and finally the engine began to exibit strange behaviors and the check engine light came on as well as an array of other panel lights.
I made it to dealer and an alternator and battery later was on the road the point being the car will run strictly on the battery.
I would check simple cheap things first ground strap to alternator brackett, small black wire which I believe is part of the field circuit(easy to break) and of couse the positive and negative battery cables and connection to battery which can crust up and inhibit a charge or discharge depending... then the battery which can short out to zip in a blink( Ask me how I know)
If all that looks good then perhaps the alternator or vr is the culprit. Good luck jkel
