Ok, let's go the easiest way - do the rear shelf. On the 1st month or two you won't notice any vibration or other issues. But later you'll decide to strengthen and weight the shelf. On the 4ft month you'll read about different types of enclosures and your 1ft thought will be "cool, I'll have the infinite baffle". But later you'll notice that you don't have infinie baffle cause of air leaks happening around the shelf border. You may try to fix'em but finally you'll see that you've got two huge holes - stock places for rear speakers!
So in about half a year or so you'll come to idea to build your 1st speaker (closed box or bass-reflex - whatever). Don, don't you want to save this half'o'year?

(Now: Pioneer DVH-P680MP + DEQP6600 + GM5200T
+ DLS W710 handmade bandpass (4th order) + RW6 + Iridium 3 + UR1
+ couple of tuuuned (twicked) noname 4ch amps
+ Alto mobile Drive 30 (n/a anymore)
+ 60 Ah Varta to save on power wires and caps
Total: $unknown
h/w and s/w for measurement and design not included)
I started with 5" "full-range" in front and 6x9's in the rear shelf. If I knew all that stuff I know now I'd save some pennies and lot of time.
