Timing? Have you checked that?
Just curious - when it started was it from dead cold and when it did not start was it warm? If so that should give you a clue that it could be sensor related.
I am not familiar with the LH system but have worked on an L system and CIS. With the L jetronic, ignition is completely independent from fuel delivery but some basics still apply. When I had sysmptoms like yours it was due to two things: poor sensor grounds and vacuum leaks at intake manifold.
The LH system can probably compensate for small vacuum leaks but not big ones and if a sensor isn't working because its not properly grounded then your problem is increased.
If you rebuilt this engine or installed some or all of the FI yourself - I'd begin with the basics - testing each component independently and in sequence as per Bentley. Then I would check your wiring and vacuum leaks.
Try to take extraneous items not essential to basic running out of the equation.
There is a reason why many mechanics don't like troubleshooting these kinds of problems - it takes a huge amount of time to diagnose every part and test every component. Frustration leads to throwing parts at the problem and high costs. If time is on your side use it wisely.
