pushing your luck a little maybe. If that's the first chain, it has stretched to an extent where the valve timing maybe a little off...not too serious, but if the chain snaps...valves hit pistons. Stupid strict emissions states like mine may be an issue also if the timing is anything other than spot on. BTW replacing the guides is just as important...the old ones will have tramline wear marks all over them and will rapidly wear a new chain...not an area to cheap out!
You can replace the chain alone without removing the engine, but you have to use a chain with a link, and you cannot replace the guides...only do this if the guides are not too old. Anytime an engine is out, I replace the chain, but I will tell you that my car did 238000 before I pulled it the first time. It needed a head gasket and I did the chain/guides etc at that time. Now I'm at 303K and alls well, but any reason for engine out, and I'll replace the chain again as a matter of course.
