Alright. Still trying to trace my charging problems. 88 900T / 16v
Origins - alternator ground wire connector broke,
had a PCV problem after wards.
So, replaced connector on alternator, & wire to oil press sensor (it broke too),
replaced PCV with an OEM and related connectors, grommets and hose.
Car runs fine, but isn't charging.
Initial Assumption - it's probably wiring.
Alternator notes: I have only three wires off, the B+, the D+ and a
black ground. I can't seem to find the green wire that is supposed to go
to the idiot light (and it does not light up). SO, am I looking for a green wire for that? And where might I find it? Or is the idiot light off
the D+ wire? (I'm kinda colorblind.)
Alternator examination - appearance is good, it's about 18 months old,
brushes are long and cleanly, evenly worn. Tension is correct.
PROBLEM: Only getting about 11-12V (tops) out of it. No increase when idle is increased to 2000.
PLAN: (includes cleaning and dielectric grease for any connection)
1) Replace idiot light wire if I can find it. Check bulb in dash if it's off the D+.
2) Check B+ cable to starter for corrosion - I know I have to be careful there about corrosion and hidden damage.
3) Check D+ connectors and wires - same care.
4) Should I look at the pin connector behind the fuse panel?
5) Check and clean distribution block on right side, and recheck
batt cable ends.
6) Check ground straps. (a) alt ground has been moved to preferred alternative. Reset. (b) Check ground straps at front radiator, and gearbox.
If nothing changes - then I'll pull the alternator for a load test.
It feels more like a lot of wire tracing to me rather than a quick
(albeit) expensive fix.
Oh, is there a test for a bad VR?
Any comments on my plan? Something forgotten or obvious?
