Based on your description, you have a clutch problem and it seems that you already realize this. If the car truly did shift fine before the clutch job and crappy afterwards...there is a clutch problem. If you can improve the clutch action by pumping the pedal then either there is a leak somewhere or there is air in the system. Bleeding these clutch circuits seems to give some people a real hard time and can be made more difficult if the hose that connects the master and slave is old and sick. Hoses like that swell internally during long exposure to brake fluid and that can make bleeding difficult and some people give up while there is still air in the system. Also, when an old crusty hose is manipulated, like when the slave is changed out, it can crack and develop small leaks which will also cause loss of clutch action (and an evident leak). You should look for a leak, and I'd look closely at that used slave, and if no leak is evident then proceed to bleed the system until all the air is out of it. There are lots of opinions on the "best" technique for that posted here. I've always had good, fast results by sticking a 2' length of clear vinyl hose on the bleed
nipple, filling it with brake fluid, opening the nipple and then blowing the fluid through (hold the hose straight up of course). You can use a Mity-vac, air compressor dialed down to 2-3 psi or your lungs (no kidding). Have the cap off of the reservoir and remove fluid there to the correct the level as it rises. Once the system is fully bled you'll be able to determine whether the master cylinder is OK. If you still have to pump the pedal to achieve full clutch action then the master is probably in need of re-building. The kit is cheap and fairly easy to install, some guys do it while the MC is still bolted to the firewall. I don't like lying under the dashboard that much so I usually remove the MC for re-building. If you want to spend the $$$ you can install a new MC as well but these MCs rebuild pretty reliably. Good luck
