if your looking at the upper arms with rust on them, don't worry about it.
320,000 miles i have yet to break an upper arm.
my first lower control arm snapped at 220,000 miles, i replaced the other one at the same time.
im not looking at the fact that there's a little rust here and there that needs to be preped and painted, im looking at the toll the arms took.. the 200,000 mile toll of road abuse. replacing the hole arm gives the car another 200,000 miles, i have heard of arms snapping with less miles. it is a wounder they made it so long. im under the impression when you look at the lower control arm its nothing but rust (no paint what so ever left)
which would indicate they are the original arms saab sold the car with.
the upper control arms need bushing replaced at about 290,000 (others experienced this sooner) which can be done with out removing the arm from the car, however.. it is a pain this rates a 8 on the scale. i had a saab indy do mine just because of the pain it is, an the Indy charged me 250 buxs per arm.
replacing the lower arms is very simple the steps go as such,
tools needed, floor jack, 1 ton jack, socket set.
this is what to do with them,... now ill worn u this will go quick just because the operation is simple.,.. its dawning on me i posted this operation before... oh well here it goes
pull the road wheel, (using the floor jack to lift the car)
remove the 2 nuts (not the bolts) off the lower ball joint (ball joint to arm) take the 1 ton jack place it under the ball joint and lift a little so the pressure is off the ball joint bolts (the 2 the nuts have been removed from now remove bolts)
lower 1 ton and remove it from under ball joint.
unbolt screw bolts from car frame (control arm bushing housing bolts) 8 of them
there
you just extracted the lower control arm
installation is the reverse of uninstallation.
note: getting the lower bolts back into the lower ball joint will take some finesse but is very possible
1000 bux sheez i need to work on cars for a liven
