We're on Nokian Hakka 4's now (just swapped them on yesterday evening because we're getting 6 inches tonight)... great tires. Had Hakka 1's before that which were also great... studded are better still (we're unfortunately not allowed studs here, but I've driven an '89 with studded hakkas and it is brilliant, an absolute blast to drive)...
My bias is towards deep snow performance, and Nokians can't be beat there. If you are looking primarily for straight line stopping on ice, I know a lot of people like Michelin X-Ice, and they might be a touch better than unstudded Nokians for that, but studded, the Hakkas are in another world... Older Hakkas had thinner sidewalls and a little more play on dry pavement than other tires, but I don't find that as much with the Hakka4's...
good luck!
James...
