Power Steering Pump P/S JOB is a pain..... Posted by bert [Email] (#365) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bert) on Thu, 30 Oct 2008 08:08:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I just changed the P/S pump on my '91 900 S Convertible, what a pain to do the job....
Here are some tips for you. Don't trust the Bentley Manual, you won't get the pump out the way it is illustrated in their manual. Besides that it is a messy job with oil spilling around it is possible to get the pump on the bracket out of the engine compartment.
1: Undo the suction hose, consider changing it.
2: Disconnect the pressure hose from the metal feeder hose right above the engine mount.
3: Take the A/C belt off, followed by the P/S belt. Loosen the tensioner to do it.
4: Remove the A/C idler pully with bracket, this helps you to get better access to the lower P/S
bracket mounting bolt.
5: Remove the driver side engine mount bracket, the one connecting the engine head to the engine mount (large nut). You have to remove the cross bracket to get the engine bracket off (two smaller nuts) . Support the engine with a jack and raise the engine (under the final drive,NOT UNDER THE TRANSMISSION. This helps you to get more clearance between the fire
wall and engine as well.
6: Remove the lower bolt that holds the P/S bracket and remove the entire bracket with P/S pump. You will only get the pump connected to the bracket out of the place when the engine mount is gone. Otherwise you would have to unmount the P/S pump from the bracket in a very tight place. Undoing and remounting the new pump this way is possible, but would take hours and lots of nerves.
Remove the P/S pulley only with proper equipment, I don't have it and had it done at a Mercedes shop for $ 20. Make sure when installing the pulley to the new pump that it will be forced onto the shaft ALL THE WAY, till you can't see the shaft anymore. Otherwise you might have the A/C idler pulley and the P/S pulley touching each other. In addition you should order the rubber bushings for the P/S bracket, since the old one are most likely old and brittle.
Be very careful if you install a new suction hose, the container holding the P/S fluid is delicate and can brake. Take a very sharp knife to cut into the old hose and loosen it this way.
I hope that my tips are helping you on your P/S job!
