you can see the linkage by looking down between the engine where the belts are and the firewall. you will see the steering rack and the easiest way to find the shift shaft linkage is to have a helper in the drivers seat, ENGINE OFF, and have them just move the shifter forwards and backwards, you will be able to see it.
What are you looking for? whether you have the old style coupler or the new style. suspect you have the new style.
The old style looks like a "D" cell battery cut off to 2/3 or so length.
The new style looks like a Bow tie, almost.
The difference will be very apparent.
If you have the New Style, it has most likely seperated and when you move the shifter to the right or left the coupler is not transmitting that movement properly to the transmission. It, for lack of a better work, lags and never gets there. The coupler is made similar to a motor mount, a sandwich of metal on the top bolted to one side, rubber in the middle, and metal on the bottom bolted to the other side.
There are a couple of quick "work arounds" to get you going until you can do a real fix (replace the rubber or the bolt/nut that may have come open).
These require going underneath the car, so at least three jackstands are needed.
Raise the car and put the jack stands at the jack points, and then another one somewhere else under the car (I like the lower A arm pivot) just to be sure.
four or so very stout zip ties, the kind that doesn't break like the ones I got recently, you go to the Box tie and basically put the zip ties on it, two in a cross pattern, and one around each end.
The alternative is to use two hose clamps, this will last a long time, maybe better than the original. The big difference is that you have to align the hose clamps such that the fat screw portion does not get hung up on anything. I forget how it aligns to do this, but again a helper in the car that can cycle through *all* of the gears VERY SLOWLY to allow you to check and adjust as needed. again, once you are in there this will all be fairly clear.
You could do the zip tie now and then come back with hose clamps on the weekend if needed.
Let us know how it goes...
