your apc system is fine. otherwise you wouldn't get anywhere near the 'orange' zone. clicking is apc solenoid on top of radiator. thats what it does. clicks open and shut quite fast. brake pedal should disable apc, which it sounds like it is doing on your car.
While babying your ride for a few days, did you by any chance put cheap gas in? i think you may have had some less than perfect gas (you did say you were miles fromhome?). Also, are you aware that ambient temps affect boost? In the desert....It gets hot.
As others have mentioned, run a tank of the best gas around (as in, highest octane), plus throw some Techron through while you are there.
Despite some slightly alarming comments on your car, you are in good shape. you probably(almost definately) still have some less than perfect vac lines, i'm sure your timing cannot be perfect, base boost should be set-up properly, get some new spark plugs in there (the right ones), properly gapped (PROPERLY GAPPED!), swap the intercooler and inlet hoses for the later type (small improvement, only do it if there are parts available from a scrap yard, any turbo will do, doesn't need to be spg), then start playing with the apc box (prefer to get a replacement and mess with that).good luck, watch the trans...
