I used stainless steel hardware. The rivets that originally held the parts together were not hardened. They cut very easily with the Dremel, and dented when I hit them with the punch. My guess is that they are supposed to shear if something jams up so you don't have catastrophic breakage. Just like a flywheel key on a lawnmower, or shear pins on a snow-blower. I can't imagine why else they would rivet the thing. You'd think it would be a one-piece item.
The only time that there is stress on it is when the motor is being started. The reason it failed is that my ignition switch got wet and would not return to the run position. It got stuck in the start position, so the starter stayed engaged while I was driving. That stressed the rivets. I replaced the switch too, so everything should be copasetic now.
No alignment pins that I could see. I just did one rivet at a time to be sure everything went back together correctly. The screws fit in really snug, there is no play at all--got lucky.
