I'm posting a series of (kind of contradictory) comments from Paul Bob's old posts that I copied and saved in separate word processor files:

I went to help a neighbor repair a distributor that was leaking internally into his distributor cap and onto his heat shield. His car is a '91 turbo.
My recollection from my '89T was that the distributor shaft had a spiral groove and some fiber washers, which I replaced with fiber washers from a hardware store's plumbing selection. This ended my leak.
(But he discovered the '91 had a rubber shaft seal instead.)

I believe the plumbing washer is made by Lasco. The bag says #26 fiber
washer. Part number is 02-1818P.
Dimensions are printed on the bag:
19/32 x 15/16
so the outer diameter is 15/16". It's also listed as
being 1/16" thick. I can't remember if I used one or
two of them.
I'll be rebuilding one for a friend this weekend so ask me next week how it works.

FYI - the part number and dimensions I posted for the fiber washers in the distributor is incorrect. I've been working with a couple of other folks on this and so far we've found that there are at least two versions of the 16 valve distributor. One has a spiral groove on its shaft and the other doesn't. Each of them (as well as the 8V distributors measured) uses fiber washers to fit a .490 inch shaft. So a 1/2 inch I.D. fiber washer should work if its O.D. doesn't exceed about .8 inches. More details once we find appropriate fiber washers and try them out.
So Paul Bob's posts were kind of inconclusive as to exactly what he used but I believe he did find something that fitted.
