Thanks to all the great postings here, I just solved my fuel smell problems on my 93 900S. I wanted to post my experiences. I had the smell in the trunk (bad) and the interior. I tightened the fittings around the filler neck which solved the trunk smell (no cracking or fuel pump issues). I still got a smell in the pass compartment which usually wentaway after driving for 30sec or so.
Based on recommendations here, I looked at the charcoal cannister as the culprit. I did the electrical checks in Bentley to make sure the valve worked and got power. I used a hand vac pump to check the valve still sealed. I ordered a new cannister from thesaabsite. I did the swap out last night. Rather than removing the modules and pumps above the cannister, I took the cannister out through the hole left by removal of the corner light lens - it just fit without removing the headlight and was easier than undoing a bunch of the other stuff.
It turns out the cannister was quite old, the case was noticeably swollen, and it weighed a bit more than the new one. It was probably saturated from overfilling and age.
Contrary to other posts I've seen, my valve does not buzz or change tone with RPM. It is basically on or off and makes no sound. If yours buzzes, something is wrong with the valve or electrics.
