The shaft of the distributor sometime has a reverse spiral groove cut into it. This is like the old air cooled VW's distributors and crank shaft belt pulley had to eliminate any oil seals.. As the engine turns the shaft, internal engine pressure causes to oil up the shaft. The reverse groove flings the oil back, away from the outside of the distributor. As the car cools down, the oil, after high mile on the engine becomes harden/coked and clogs the spiral grooves and keeps the distributor sleeve bearings from getting lubed. A sign of this is oil under the distributor cap. After it looses the oil lubricating properties, the bearings wear and the shaft starts to wobble, taking the internal part with it. I believe this is what your talking about?
