I removed the whole shifter assy. rod is all the way out. Part of a plan to replace the ign switch. My screw up.

I need to get to sob back in.

There are two issues I see, after thinking on it for awhile.

1) inserting the rod from the interior back into the tunnel and getting it thru the opening into the engine room.

This seems right now to be patience driven. It is putting the 3-ft long thing thru a hole 2-feet away when you can't well control the rod. I will avoid obscene similies. At least hear if not in the shop. I hope<G>.

With patience I assume I can do this (so far, lacking A i have not been able to do B) and get the shifter rod back thru the bushing into the under-car environment. Then I have to refit the boot. Which could be fun in itslf, but at least get it over the shaft. With the shaft poking into the Under-the car-area and engaged with the gearbox shaft...

at this point I need to deal with "what gear is engaged" so that when i cinch it up, I can derive the darn thing.

On the inside I have a pin in the holes that supposedly set the shifter at 3rd gear. Under the car there is supposed to be a SAAB tool to set the trans in 3rd, and at that point you can engage the shaft and clamp and cinch it up an you be done.

how can i fake this saab tool? is it a 1/4" rod? Inside the cabin a screwdriver serves for the alignment tool. under the car, ??? The pic in Beltley is of no help. it LOOK like a piece of welding rod bent to (1) fit in the hole and (2) somehow retain itself by clipping onto something.

So...I need to know how one resets the shifter w/o "factory tools" in the situation described.

when I originally posted the question months ago i got no response. Which may simply reflect an unusual situation. Or it may reflect a bad description on my part or ??

however, I do need to solve the problem or I'll have to junk the car. and I do not want to do that.
