Problem solved-- Pilot Bearing seized Posted by Arabiflora [Email] (#1129) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Arabiflora) on Tue, 9 Dec 2008 23:04:10 In Reply to: My clutch sounds like a French horn, Arabiflora [Profile/Gallery] , Sun, 19 Oct 2008 11:51:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
For the record... I finally bit the bullet and ripped into the clutch again, discovered that the pilot bearing (the one seated in the center of the flywheel) was locked up. I pulled the flywheel, used a 15/16" socket and a washered bolt head on bearing side, larger (22 mm?) socket with washer and nut on the other and a ratchet to pull the old bearing, replaced with new one. Upon reassembly, all systems are go.
Moral of the story-- Finish the f-ing job. I'm kicking myself for not dealing with that component the first time I had the clutch out, especially since, all things considered, it's about the easiest part of the job.
