Agreed on all points...
Years ago a head gasket on an '88 Turbo was my first real wrenching experience on any car. It's very time consuming, but not really difficult if you have the right tools. Having a helper to lift the head off is useful. Reassembly can be a slight bear, especially cam alignment the first time through. But it isn't rocket science, and if you're in no hurry you can get it done in a week putting in just an hour or two a night.
ABSOLUTELY get the head fully checked by a reputable machine shop. Have it vacuum & pressure tested, checked for flatness, probably do a valve job. Put $100-$200 into the head and know when you're done it'll be happy for a long time.
DO NOT drive the car any further if you plan to fix it. Jonathan is spot on about about water destroying bearings. The more you drive it with water in the oil the more likely you will do long-term irreparable damage. You also run the risk of contaminating the cooling system with oil, which can lead to cooling issues down the road.
