Mystery solved -- the rest of the story!!!!! Posted by Notnoel [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: oil poring out of distributor!! HELP!!! 1990 900T vert, Landjet ![]() ![]() |
OK, so I finally get to really look at this when it is not night, and it is not poring rain, and I am not all hyped up after putting out a fire in the engine compartment. So, here's what happened for the future reference of any unfortunate enough to experience the same problem:
It was a stress crack on the oil supply line, right where the line meets the flange (there's a lot of vibration there, I suppose). The eye-shaped flange connector is located about a half inch away from the distributor. When the crack formed, it shot a tiny stream of oil upward against the body of the distributor cap. From the passenger side of the car, that makes it appear that oil is pouring off the bottom of the cap, in exactly the same way the oil used to drip from the classic bad o-ring issue (but at ten times the flow rate).
I have AAA-plus and get a 100 miles of free towing, so the car is home now. awaiting my repair. I actually figured it out on the tow ride home. I had pulled the PVC nipple out of the valve cover to test if it was causing the head to over pressurize and force the oil out of the distributor. When it continued to run like a faucet, I concluded tha the PCV check valve was not the culprit, and as noted above began to worry about valve seals and head gasket failures. However, it occurred to me that, with the nipple pulled out of the v/c, even those would not be able to pressurized the head, and some thing else must be going on. Once I could see what I was doing, in the calm of a clear afternoon, the problem immediately revealed itself.
Thanks to Landjet for getting back, but all is very cool now (I even havve the part in my spares collection!
