Refer to Townsend's site for complete information (especially for a diy job) and pictures, but to summarize: my understanding is that the factory gasket on the 2.1 lacked material between coolant passages and cylinders in some regions. With inferior coolant, this allowed faster corrosion (than on a 2.0L) and premature engine failure. I believe it was a warranty issue, and cars that replaced the original (bad) gaskets soonest (typically 30k?) suffered less pitting. It is possible that yours got a redesigned gasket earlier in life, and if so you are lucky! At 170k, if it is on the original bad gasket with old green shit and not pitted, it is probably a miracle! We bought ours on it's second crap gasket, which failed under <100k with substantial pitting requiring repair...

I believe Elring was the oem... the last gasket I used I bought at a saab dealer, and it was cheap, so imho, for such an important part, it's a no brainer, go straight to the source... just double check the P/N on the one you get is the new design + not the old one.

Now's a good time to switch to Merc coolant, new thermostat, the works (see Townsend's site). We've done it, and so far so good!
