I'd say cmyles is definitely on the right track. I have had similar scenarios happen twice. Both times on cars that had been sitting, so I'd say it's unlikely they'd affect you, but here goes:
1. On my 5-door, I had no forward movement but good clutch/shifter action. Turns out one of the wheel hub splines had totally failed, and my unlimited slip differential was sending power from the wheel with grip to the one with no grip.
2. On an '87 convertible, the pressure plate spring had totally failed. I got about five miles down the road when it died...
