It's of course possible that that hole was made by something striking the transaxle on the outside but it appears classic for the old "breaks while spinning fast and makes it's own escape route". Usually the hole is made by a big chunk of laygear teeth that has taken flight and that's not something you fix in the car. I'll bet that if you remove that cover and roll the unit you'll find the laygear has a chunk missing. This doesn't happen because of a factory defective laygear in an otherwise perfect transaxle, it's caused by generalized severe wear, often coupled with a lack of lubrication. That's why a unit with a hole in it usually isn't worth rebuilding, it just needs too many parts. All educated conjecture, a close inspection by a good classic 900 mechanic may paint a different picture (but I doubt it).
The cost of replacing the unit is highly variable depending on where you are, who does the work and whether you opt for a used transaxle or a freshly rebuilt one. The best advice is to seek out an independent Saab shop with experience on these old 900s and get prices from several transaxle sources. A rebuilt unit will cost more than a used one but implies a more reliable investment of your labor money. You could spend a lot to install a used unit that only goes a couple of thousand miles. Expect to spend approximately $1500 to $3000 as a rough guide. Good luck
