What a job, but it's complete. First, a big thanks to saaboc, Justin V., and Roger D. for all their insightful help. Taking out the dash, facia, and instrument cluster took many hours to label everything, but it all came out according to fixmysaab. The car is a black '89 SPG.
The first instrument cluster I prepared with the white face gauges did not work. The right blinker stayed on and the odometer would not run and there was a click, clck, clikcing nosie so out it came. That was 10 wasted hours. I ended up using the original cluster, the idea was to swap clusters, but it did not happen. The original cluster with the white face gauges went in fine. I have a way to install the white face gauges without removing the needles!
Putting in the new dash took all of five minutes! I had apprehesion about this for years and the thing just went right in. I made sure all the vent tubes connected to the dash facia and had to fabricate some card board tubes that were probably missing. One of the biggest hints from saaboc was to extend the glove box wires 1-2 ft. I see what you mean! Even taking out that wire from the original dash was a chore, but extending the wires made putting the dash in a piece of cake!
Once I got the facia on it was nice to actually have the plastic tubes and the screws go in where they were suppossed to in the new dash. Everything went back together perfect. Several major set backs though. When I first started the car there was a major vacuum leak coming from the air distribution knob. So everything came back out, one of the hoses off the octopus had popped out so I crazy glued it back in, but still a hissing sound. Turns out the 'new' air distribution knob was bad so I swapped it with my old one which I had been using for testing. I also fixed a vacuum leak from the turbo gauge. For the first time since I have owned the car (5 years) no hissing sound from behind the dash.
I connected the air distribution wires according to Roger D., see post below and all seems fine. I replaced all dash light bulbs and secured the facia rehostat according to fixmysaab. The only small issue I have is when first starting the car and driving sometimes the speedo does not respond. This was not happening before to this original cluster. Sometimes I can reach in through the speaker and twist the speedo cable, but it is connected tight for sure. Then the speedo repsonds. Anyone have any idea what could be going on?
Sorry for the long post, but it took me five days and I didn't want to post until I was done. Thanks again for everyones help. I couldn't have done this without this boards help and I feel so proud I was able to do all this myself. You guys ROCK!
Happy New Years!
Cliff
