Ari, all-- You're right, as usual, thanks for warning me off the wrong track and putting me on the right one. Justin-- I'll look for a fused relay of the sort you describe. However, I have a follow-up question about wiring: the relay pictured in your post appears to have two spade connectors. If my sense of how this is supposed to work is correct, I'll need more than that.
That is, I imagine that there will be two spades to "complete" the circuit from the stalk. When engaged, that circuit will close the relay. Once closed, battery power fill flow into a third spade through the relay fuse and the closed relay bridge, then out through a 4th spade and through the ww motor. I presume that I will have to identify/designate one of the pump wires as ground and find a suitable grounding point.
Do I have that about right? Also, are the relays threshold gated for input voltage? If so, it would seem prudent to test for applied voltage leaking through the decrepit stalk switch in order to see if it is sufficient to trip it (I'm thinking out loud here...)
