I've got a 93 900S and I was getting the 'click click click' during slow hard right turns for the last month or two. (I had an Empi remanned axle put in about 3 years ago but it didn't last long.) After reading the tips here on the internet, I decided to try a remanned one from Cardone (RockAuto) for $60 after core charge and do it myself. This was after having a rebuilt MT put in (the old one seized) about 2 months ago.

I got a Sears 1/2 drive bar and Lisle 32mm axle nut socket off ebay. I tried to buy the Saab tool to put between the upper arm and the body but it wasn't available. I just made two 3/4" blocks from some pressure treated wood I had laying around the garage. The wood had been treated with some anti-termite chemicals so I suspect I got a lung full of arsenic-laden wood dust, oh well. I loosened the axle nut, put the blocks into the locations noted in Bentley's, put chocks behind the rear wheels, jacked up the vehicle, put it on an axle stand, took the wheel off and took the axle nut all the way off. I went to undo the inner joint boot clamp and discovered the clamp had been left loose by the shop that did the MT swap (I'm calling them on Monday to let them know about the poor work). Per recommendations from experts on the internet, I only undid the two bolts - 17mm - for the upper ball joint (no spring compressor, no messing around with the caliper, no lower tie rod or ball joint bolts) and pulled the ball joint out of the arm to move the hub assembly away from the body. I turned the wheel to the right and tapped the end of the axle with a rubber mallet a couple of times and worked the axle end out of the hub. After making sure the inner joint boot was loosed from the inner driver, I just pulled the old axle straight out easy as pie. After greasing the inner joint tripod bearing on the new unit real good, install was simply reverse of removal. Done in an hour, including making the little wood blocks. Because of the recent MT swap, I didn't have to deal with seized bolts though so that made the job a lot simpler.

This was so easy, I'll never pay a shop to do this again.
