Death of an Alternator (Story w/ Moral) Posted by tibbidoh [Email] (#1014) [Profile/Gallery] (more from tibbidoh) on Mon, 19 Jan 2009 07:42:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Had a meeting that I was running late for and jumped into the 91 900tc and fired her up. The windows weren't working, the tach not moving and the ABS light along w/ the brake fluid light were on. No other idiot lights on so off I go. Later finding out that the turn signals also didn't work (flashers OK). On my second stop the car would not start so I had to push it off and I'm thinking "Alternator ?", but the idiot light came on w/ the car in start position and now isn't on so assuming a ghost in the machine, on I went to deliver cam and idler shaft bearings to my machine shop / golfing buddy for installation into the 96 engine. Just before I get there the car dies and will not even click when I try to turn it over. So we push it over to the shop and trow a 10 amp 45 min. charge on it. While charging he is rebuilding an antique John Deere 2 cylinder tractor engine w/ the gigantic pistons, really neat, but another story. Take the charger off and fire her back up and every thing springs back to life and still no running alternator light. Got home and the alternator is charging (12.8v), but later the same thing happens again and sure enough the running voltage had dropped below 12v. Replaced the alternator and everything is fine.
Moral:(Please correct me if I am wrong) I had put an LED light in my alternator idiot light of course to work when the car wasn't running and I am guessing that the light has to allow current to travel both ways to work properly and of course couldn't because the light is a diode.
