Similar problem as yours on base model 86 -I recall from a very hazy memory the ground for the dome light - ( assume you mean to the rear of the driver?) runs two directions - back to the trunk light on a four door and forward and down to the console switch and from there to a centre point underneath the handbrake. The centre switch is merely a ground interrupt as is the door switch. I may be wrong about the ground to the back of the car but the black wires do run front and back if you look closely (as does power).
At any rate...the light will also go on when you ground one or both retaining screws to the body of the car -take a look at the assembly carefully and you will see how it works... so that you can have the always on feature, always off feature and the on feature when you open the door or flip the console switch.
I eventually ended up installing my own ground running down the B pillar and across the floor to the centre console switch and from there to the driver's side door.
