It is no less a pain to prep and paint an SAS whaletail than it is to fix an OEM whaletail--I've done both. You can repair the studs on the OEM by removing them and using new stainless steel hardware. If you have tears in the rubber, it can be repaired with urethane windshield setting compound. If the inner metal band (embedded in the rubber) has failed, search this board for techniques to repair it. It's been covered before.
The one thing I can't stress enough with the SAS whaletail is that you have to be absolutely certain to take all possible precautions to remove the mold release before attempting to paint it or do any contouring/filling. I also had to do a lot of fiberglass work to reshape the underside to contour correctly to the hatch on my '92, and to recreate the lip that goes under the rear window weatherstrip. Since you have an OEM whaletail on hand, you'll see what I'm eluding to there.
There are some nice pics of Jon's SAS tail in his gallery on the NYSOC website.
