most likely the problem is with the Hall Effect sensor or the connections to it. You should have a connector on the metal base of the distributor and the opening is about flush with the junction of the distributor cap and the metal of the dsitributor proper. Often that connector's mounting to the distributor breaks and a zip tie or other method is used to hold it to the distributor. There are three wires in that connector that can be seen inside the distributor, a red green and black. If the external connector moves around too much the internal wires can likewise move and sometimes get cut by the shutter wheel resulting in no pulses and no spark.
What to do? If you prove that this has in fact happened you need to repair it. You can still purchase the older version kits, these are the ones where the connector and plug from the wireing loom are somewhat oval in shape. Think of an american football that has the points cut off. The newer style of connector and plug is a dead on retangle set. 90 degree angles x four. So you can see about sourcing that.
In the meantime you can run another distributor, and you may be able to run an NA distributor but you won't have any vacuum advance. But do check to make sure as the distributor is clocked differently, so you will have to get to the timing mark TDC on the flywheel, and then note the position of the rotor, and populate the distributor cap from there. Go slowly with this!
or it could be something entirely different, but I'm going with the Hall Effect unit.
