Din't fold it in Half!!!! Just because your dealer mechanic did this, does not make it right. About ten years ago, I replaced the headliner in my wife's 86 4-door. Mine fell apart when I was taking it down. It is quite simple to remove them through the trunk, so why would you want to damage a perfectly good headliner shell???? Also, taking it through the trunk is WHOLE LOT LESS WORK than removing a door! Yikes!
My master Saab mechanic (yes at the stealership) was so impressed with my job he asked me how I did it; remember these guys are mechanics, not autobody specialists, and certainly not upholsterers.
These things are like fiberglass egg cartons. If you think folding it in half is a viable solution, go to your refrigerator and fold your egg carton in half (width-wise), then unfold it and see if it looks as good as new -- NOT! The 4-door classic Saab is getting increasingly difficult to find both as viable cars, and particularly in junkyards. Folding it in half may save you about 15 minutes, but why would you want to trash a perfectly good, extremely rare part?
Lastly, after you fold it in half to get it out, you're going to glue about a $100 worth of headliner material in it -- are you then going to fold it in half again (and stretch the crap out of the new material) to put it back in???? Certainly, you are going to see this fold when it is reinstalled this way. It would make me crazy to do all of that work and have to forever look at a defect on an 6-8 hour job that I created as a result of trying to save myself 15 minutes.
Better idea: don't devote the extra 15 minutes to taking it out the trunk. Devote an extra half an hour to the project, then: 1) take it out the trunk (like you are supposed to - how do you think they got it in there in the factory, huh?); and 2) take a 15-minute beer break when you're done to congratulate yourself for having some sense of quality invested into the job!
