It's official. I am indeed a fool. May Thor's Hammer smite me.
I tested my theory last night after and unplugged the coolant temperature sensor. Started right up and ran fine.
Here's what I think may have happened.
In the process of chasing down the problem, I disconnected the control unit and the ignition amplifier. I cleaned the terminals before I did any testing. I suspect that did the trick. Since the diagnostic on the ignition amp failed, I didn't try to start the car after I reconnected everything. Impossible to say but it probably would have started up had I tried. I've got a theory that it's all due to some Swedish Poltergeist.
I guess the true moral of the story is that you want to make certain you've got a foot in the end zone before you start the celebration. I did gain some valuable experience and knowledge running the diagnostics, so it's not a total loss.
