transporting an auto box in the hatchback?

Howdy Saabers,
Next weekend I'm picking up a used (rebuilt) T37 auto transmission for my GF's 900. We're driving about 300 miles to pick it up. I'm trying to decide if I should rent a small uhaul trailer or put the transmission in the back of my 2door 89 900S. My car has a Saab trailer hitch and is all wired and ready to go.
Saftey issues? If we got in a wreck I think I'd rather have the 300 lbs of transmission in a trailer and not in the hatch. or maybe I could put it in the hatch and strap it to the rear bumper and shut the hatch.
Just wondering if anyone had an opinion or experience with this... Thanks
