Yo Nutt!
I think that what was causing the battery rundown. The inner toothed nylon was broken about 10 inches from innermost end and the extender/retractor motor wouldn't shut off, thus draining the battery. The motor still seemed to work, at least until I disassembled it and now I'm not so sure. This is one helluva of piece of engineering. What goes on inside that rubber box on the sleeve into which the mast fits, which receives the operating power and apparently reverses the polarity. Or something. Is there some kind of magnetic sensor or and induction coil in there to detect when the antenna mast is fully extended then fully retracted?
I'll look at the 9000 in a nearby junkyard and hope the unit is still on it. I don't think it makes sense to purchase an OEM mast only (if indeed it is available), which I assume comes with the coiling nylon toothed rod. Do people actually mess with rebuilding these things?
