I'm still fighting with my car and I'm pretty sure I've ruled out anything electrical. So with the advice from a Saab tech from a dealer I began checking out the timing chain. In the pictures below everything is at TDC, at least as far as the flywheel tells me.

Here is the intake side...http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd347/dinofanatic/intake.jpg

Here is the exhaust....http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd347/dinofanatic/exhaust.jpg

I have limited knowledge as far as engine internals go, but it appears to me that both the intake and exhaust cams are slightly off... It also looks like the chain and sprockets are in fairly good shape. Now comes the slightly confusing part. I noticed on the chain it has Iwis stamped on the side, which would mean that at some point the chain had been replaced. Now, I also pulled the tensioner and the length came to 12mm. At this point I also discovered the following...

It looks like the pad that the tensioner pushes on is rather worn and has chipped...http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd347/dinofanatic/tensioner.jpg

And I'm also pretty sure the guide is not supposed to look chipped like that..http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd347/dinofanatic/wtf.jpg

So, if my assumptions are correct would it be reasonable to conclude that whoever replaced the parts previously only replaced the chain and sprockets? Either way, it looks like the whole thing will have to be replaced. I remember someone here mentioning that it is possible to replace all of it without removing the engine. Although in order to do that there was a whole mess of other things that had to be removed also. Only reason I'm entertaining the idea of doing it this way is because I don't want to take it to a shop and I also don't have access to a hoist. But I do have a garage and a (currently) sturdy back!

Does anyone have some light they can shed on this problem? Or do I just have to bite the bullet and take it to a shop when I can scrape up enough money?
