'85 Saab Radiator Fan Turn on

The radiator fan has become slow to start. The Temperature gauge climbs much higher than it used to (dangerously close to the red). When I shut the car off, I can hear the fan turn on. This wasn't a problem during cold weather when the car is doing highway speeds but with the warm weather coming, I see problems on the horizon. Many thanks for any assistance.
