From Broken Control Arm to Broken Something Else?

Greetings again,
So, I'm about to start working on removing the control arms (see this thread: http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/900/index.html?bID=384563) and I noticed something that seemed a bit odd.
It's this -- With the front-end completely jacked up off the ground and in gear, the front wheels move freely when rotated as if going forward and in reverse. Is this normal?? Seems to me that while in gear the front wheels should not be able to rotate.
That said, I have to say that I did drive a short blocks distance with the broken control arm (very difficult to steer even, at a snail's pace). The control arm broke in front of my neighbor's house and I needed to get it into my garage. I drove the car at about 1 MPH (or less) and did notice a 'burning smell' when I finally got it into my garage. I assumed the smell was coming from the clutch since I really needed to engage it quite a bit in order not to accelerate too much and to get the car up a small incline into my cozy garage.
Ouch, I hope I have not damaged the transmission or clutch.
Please advice on this issue, and thanks in advance for you time and expertise.
Jason
