Well, the intake air hose is disconnected, the car will have problems starting since nothing is being sucked through the AMM. That's only a momentary problem - there is a basic program for starting the car, but that lasts only during cranking and IMHO/IME isn't very good. Several of my LH 2.4 cars will not start without an AMM. Once the car is running, with nothing being pulled across the AMM, you get limp home mode which will basically keep the car running indefinitely, albeit with a CEL.
If the car dies when that hose is reconnected, I suspect it's either being starved for air (maybe a mouse's nest?) or you're getting air pulled across a bad AMM and the car is dying. Reconnecting that hose does nothing except put the air filter and AMM back online, so....
