What you're experiencing is pump cavitation and fuel starvation. You turn to the left, all the fuel goes to the right side of the tank, and you have no fuel at the pump.
This normally is not an issue until you approach or get into the range where the low fuel light is on, unless you've got a lot of off-camber left turns in your neighborhood...
Solutions:
1) add fuel to tank. This should NOT happen AT ALL if you have more than 1/4 tank of fuel.
2) remove pump from tank, and check the total length of the pump and pickup against the info in Bentley's/Haynes or the Factory manuals. Sometimes the little rubber hose that connects the pump to the pickup gets short as they age, or perhaps disintegrates completely. Replace/adjust the hose/total length if needed.
2a) check that the plastic "boat" in the bottom of the tank is in the right spot (right under the pump), and that the return line is clipped into it. The top of the "boat" has a round hole the size of the pump pickup, and helps a bit with the cavitation, but the pump & pickup have to be the right length to sit in the "boat" and to pick up the fuel.
3) replace fuel tank and pump assembly with 1986- 16v tank & pump. This gets you the pre-pump and the "bucket" which all but eliminates the cavitation problem. Basically, it'll only cavitate once it's out of fuel completely... (you really don't need the tank, BUT you need to get the wires into the tank for the pre-pump, and the later tanks are fitted for that already)
