Is the transmission making any noise? My gut tells me that loss of 5th on a 15 year old Saab is probably a sign of massive internal damage, but if you're lucky it's the shift coupler or the shifter rod itself. You can inspect the coupler by looking directly down the firewall while someone move the shifter around - you should be able to tell whether the coupler is no longer coupling. That said, if you don't know exactly what you're looking for, you may need to be underneath it. The shifter rod generally breaks in such a way that the shifter doesn't behave itself - a common symptom is it twisting while moving through the gears...
