use all of the electrial and mechanical items from the target car on the engine. That means use the AIC and other items from the 1990 car on the incoming 1989 engine. Anything that plugs into the harness use the stuff that was in the car (even the injectors if they worked ok - why mess with a good thing - keep the others as spares). Use the 1990 intake manifold and throttle body and all of that on the 1989 engine. Basically you are almost doing a "short block" in american engine parlance. you are putting a replacement engine w/transmission and head in where another one was.
Also, if your 1990 transmission has the short dipstick, the screw in dipstick, or the long more traditional dipstick AND your incoming transmission is different... and you like the old one you can unbolt that entire plate on each transmission and SWAP them. Your choice. I hate the screw in one, the short one is nice when the engine is cold - difficult when hot, the long one is nice but the dipstick does get in the way when doing a head gasket (not often I know).
